German R. Foxtail Millet
German Strain R Millet is most commonly used as a warm season hay crop and due to its relatively fast maturity can produce an abundant amount of high-quality hay in as little as 40 to 50 days. German Strain R Millet is relatively fine stemmed but is not known for its regrowth potential. It is therefore mostly a one-shot crop although limited regrowth can be experienced with adequate rainfall. German Strain R Millet can be used for forage, either for hay or grazing, as a component in wildlife or cover crop blends or as a nurse crop for fall planted alfalfa. German Strain R Millet should be harvest for hay when in the “boot” stage before the seed head emerges from the plant. Care should be used when feeding German Strain R Millet hay that has been allowed to “head out” due to possible negative properties of the grain and should not be fed to horses. German Strain R Millet is quite drought hardy and can produce a respectable amount of forage on very little water. However, Strain R Millet can accumulate nitrates so be sure to manage for nitrate levels and have the forage tested.
